MORALES MATOS - MUSIC DIRECTOR
Born in Puerto Rico, conductor Jaime Morales-Matos spent his university years in the United States where he obtained his formal education. He graduated from Indiana University with a Bachelor in Music degree and an Artist Diploma in Trombone, the first such award granted to a brass player. He also studied conducting with Thomas Baldner. He further training at Cincinnati College-conservatory of Music under Christopher Zimmerman and Gerhard Samuel, where he received his Master in Music degree in 1995.
In addition, he studied with Sergiu Celibidache in Munich, Herold Farberman in Bulgaria and Hans Graf in Vienna, where he received a Diploma in Conducting. In 2000 Morales-Matos attended the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen, where he worked closely with David Zinman, Jorma Panula, James Conlon and Robert Sanno. He has also participated in seminars with James Levine, Leonard Bersteain, Michael Tilson-Thomas, Gustav Meir and Roselin Pabon.
Morales-Matos has conducted in the United States (Dayton Philharmonic, Bangor Symphony, Central Ohio Symphony), Germany (Munich Philharmonic), Spain (Galicia Symphony), Austria (Tokyo Symphony), Bulgaria (Varna Philharmonic), Equador (Guayaquil Symphony), Venezuela (Venezuela Symphony), as well as in his native Puerto Rico (Puerto Rico Symphony).
Jaime Morales-Matos was appointed Music Director of the Central Ohio Symphony Orchestra in June 2002. With this orchestra he has enjoyed great success in broad range of programming. Previously he was Music Director of the Miami University Symphony Orchestra and Cover Conductor with the Dayton Philharmonic.
As a trombonist Morales-Matos has performed with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Dayton Philharmonic, Lexington Philharmonic, and the New World Symphony in the United States and the Asturias and Galicia Symphony Orchestras in Spain. In addition, he is very active in chamber music with the Gabrieli Brass Quintet and Top Brass and the Caribe Trombone Quartet. He has premiered various concertos and other works written especially for him.
